at 12.5k above sea level, this lake borders bolivia and is home to the famous floating islands, floating reeds that are tied together en masse to create small villages that float peacefully in the lake near puno. -
4 . machu picchu
if you wake before sunrise, one can climb to the top of the little known, but often seen peak which graces macchu picchu, huayna picchu for a stunning view of this world wonder. built during the peak of incan rule, and not discovered again until 1911, the mystery of its function and why its inhabitants disappeared is still uncertain -
5 . lima | cusco
lima, though congested and often recommended as a means to getting elsewhere in peru has a certain charm of its own and some of the best restaurants in the country. cusco is a quaint yet sizable city with strong spanish influences and a common gateway to the inca trail and beyond -
6 . puerto maldonado
puerto maldonado is a mecca to an abundance of wildlife and insects of all colors shapes and sizes. from more commonly known plants like rubber trees and tarantulas to lesser known cures for typhoid, fever, and little frogs the size of a fingernail, the amazon contains a rich tapestry of life that should by all means be preserved for generations to come. little do we know that it may very well hold the secret to the cure for AIDs or cancer. -
7 . the sacred valley
with rivers flowing in and architectural sites dotting the landscape, the sacred valley was one of the centers of incan agriculture. small towns still celebrate traditional holidays and farm the land as the incans did -
8 . trujillo | huanchaco
aside from being a cultural center of peru, trujillo is also home to chan chan, the largest mud city in the ancient world, and the temples of sun and moon, the largest adobe pyramid in peru. haunchaco is known for its ceviche, surf and handmade reed boats.
